Research focus

Holger Borcherding is Professor of Power Electronics, Electrical Drive Technology and EMC at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences. He is a board member of the Institute for Energy Research and the Open Direct Current Alliance (ODCA). His Power Electronics and Electrical Drive Technology working group researches intelligent energy systems and efficient energy use, particularly in industrial applications. Borcherding is scientific director and one of the initiators of the DC-INDUSTRIE projects. He has received several awards for his scientific transfer achievements in application

•    Development of highly integrated converters for electromobility and automation
•    Ultra-fast prototype production of electronics

•    2013-2020 Member of the Advisory Board of the Mechatronics Center Hannover (MZH) at Leibniz University Hannover

•    2011-2018 Member of WG1 "Drive Technology and Vehicle Integration" of the National Platform for Electromobility (NPE)
•    Board member of the Institute for Energy Research at TH-OWL since 2017
•    Board member of the Open Direct Current Alliance since 2022
•    Since 2024 Board member of the Research Association for Electrical Engineering in the ZVEI

Professional career

After completing his studies, Borcherding worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Power Electronics at the University of Hanover until 1996. He then worked as a development engineer until 2000, before starting as development manager for servo drives at Lenze Drive Systems GmbH. in 2003 he was appointed professor for power electronics, electrical drive technology and EMC at the TH OWL.

•    Transfer Prize OWL 2014 of the IHK Lippe zu Detmold and the IHK Bielefeld
•    IEEE ICDCM Best Paper Award 2019: Puls, S. Austermann, J. Borcherding, H.: Lifetime Calculation for Capacitors in Industrial Micro DC grids, 3rd IEEE International Conference on DC Microgrids (ICDCM 2019), Matsue, Japan
•    Transfer Prize of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences 2024

Academic education

Borcherding studied electrical engineering at the University of Hanover from 1985 to 1991 and received his doctorate there in 1999 with the topic "Properties of line pulse converters with impressed DC voltage".
