Adsorption storage for gases and gas mixtures

Duration
-

In this project, the storage of gases and gas mixtures in adsorbents and the possibilities of suitable technical implementation in gas tanks are examined.

In order to reduce the storage volume of gases, they are usually highly compressed (e.g. 200 bar) and stored in thick-walled high-pressure containers. An alternative to this is the storage of gases in adsorbents, whereby the same storage volume can be achieved at lower pressures (e.g. 30 bar). Activated carbon and metal hydrides are used as materials. The use of such adsorption tanks in vehicles is interesting.

In addition to gases such as methane and hydrogen, the use of gas mixtures as a fuel is also of increasing interest: methane can be subsequently mixed with hydrogen or biogas is only partially processed and contains a significant proportion of carbon dioxide in addition to methane.

In this project, the adsorption behavior of gases and gas mixtures in special activated carbons is investigated: For the use as gas storage, the generation, supply and removal of the heat of adsorption and the changes in the mixture concentrations during the charging cycles are important.
